Chicago Bears: 2019 post combine NFL Mock Draft
By Usayd Koshul
1. Third round, 87th overall: S Darnell Savage, Maryland
Even after stating that the Bears could retain Adrian Amos, the team will need to have a backup plan if Amos departs in free agency. Darnell Savage is one name to keep an eye on. Over the last few weeks, he’s been quietly making a name for himself. Now, it looks as if he’s played his way into day two conversation.
Although Savage’s biggest red flag throughout this entire process is going to be his size (5-foot-11, 198 pounds), he makes up for it with his explosiveness and speed. Additionally, one of Savage’s most underrated traits might just be his versatility. Due to this, he can play in multiple spots on the defense.
One area where Savage needs to improve in is his tackling. Unfortunately, when it comes to the point of attack, he isn’t exactly a master at it. In the NFL, safeties are always lined up about 15 yards away from the line of scrimmage, meaning they are usually the last ones to see action before a play is blown dead.
A major reason that Savage needs to fix his tackling is due to the fact that it could impact his career early on. While some say that he’s ready to be a starter right away, teams could view his lack of ability to tackle as a reason to keep him on the bench for a few games before making him a starter.
Due to the front seven that the Bears have assembled over the years, Savage would be an ideal fit as he’d get time to develop his tackling skills while being an ideal fit into coverage.
