The Chicago Bears defense is bringing back most of its core pieces next season. They will be good for a pretty long time. Their window is open to win for at least the next half decade, you would think at least. The tipping point is probably the offense (and maybe a kicker but we’re not going to go there). They have some nice pieces there and the quarterback could still get even better as time goes on.

2017 was a season to forget in general, but one of the worst moments was when Zach Miller had a terrible knee injury during a game against the New Orleans Saints in Week 8. The injury was so bad that there was a risk of amputation if things didn’t go his way. He told people after the fact that he had eight total surgeries following the injury that possibly ended his career. The Bears did the right thing and signed him to a contract for 2018, knowing he would end up on the physically able to perform list.

That left a bit of a question mark for the Bears as far as tight ends went going into the 2018 season. Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen had pretty good years at the tight end position, and they might be the duo again in 2019. There is a free agent option though if the Bears decided they wanted to add another option to the group in case of injury or performance. Oakland Raiders’ free agent Jared Cook is available.

Cook is familiar with the NFC North Division, as he was a member of the Green Bay Packers in 2016. He is coming off a two-year deal with Oakland that he signed for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. They were not particularly good as an offensive unit during that time, as the team only accumulated 10 wins over the two seasons. In 2018 he had a decent year for a middle of the pack tight end on a last-place team. He had 68 receptions for 896 total yards and added in six touchdowns.

Adding another steady option on offense for Trubisky could prove very important moving forward. If they continue to be the best defense in the NFL, and they assume the mantle as a top ten offense, they will be a real contender for the Super Bowl even more. A team that scores some serious points and plays defense that well, would be so fun to watch and could cruise through a very tough schedule.
