Chicago Bears: Three free agent Los Angeles Chargers to consider
3. Donnie Jones
The Bears special teams turned out to be the demise of the season. You know all about Cody Parkey by now. It might be valuable to the team as a whole to make a few changes in that area of play. Bears punter Pat O’Donnell is an unrestricted free agent and it might be okay to not bring him back and add a whole new dynamic. He was also the place holder on kicks and we all know how that turned out. Sorry to keep bringing that up, it still hurts.
The Chargers have a punter that is an unrestricted free agent. His name is Donnie Jones. He joined the Chargers midway through the season. He finished the season with 47 punts and averaged 42.3 yards per attempt and he pinned 15 inside the 20. Those are some decent numbers for a guy who only played half the year with them.
He also provided them with some stability on the kicking game as a holder. He was the holder on a team that made the playoffs and won a game. It may not be a bad thing for the entire duo to be switched up after the debacle that went down last season. That is no disrespect to O’Donnell at all but after what went down last season, it is just time to make a change.
Cody Parkey is gone next year and the Bears will probably be diligent with how they handle the kicking game come training camp. They will also probably monitor performance and confidence more closely next season after being rather negligent in 2018. They need to rectify the problem now otherwise they will find themselves in the same position next year, and that simply cannot happen or some other people are going to start losing jobs.
This punter situation because obviously it all can’t be placed on the place holder, but it is an extremely important job to make sure the kicker has a good ball to kick. Any miscommunications or issues could lead to big problems and Donnie Jones could be the perfect solution.
Any guy brought in to make an impact on the kicking game would have a bit of pressure on them because anybody who likes football knows what happened last year. This is a transaction that would be just as much about being a place holder as it would a punter.
