Is it possible to have too many backup quarterbacks that you like? The answer should be no. Mitchell Trubisky is the guy moving forward and everyone wants to see him be a franchise guy that helps lead this team to glory. He will hopefully have many different guys come through and be the backup, and there are a few options for next year in that role.

Last year, Chase Daniel was okay as the backup. He was fine behind Trubisky, but he did have to start a couple of games due to an injury to Trubisky. He went 1-1 in those two games, but the one loss might have cost them a home playoff game and it was to a team that the Bears were much better than. Lots of factors went into that loss so it is not all Daniel’s fault. In addition, competition in camp behind Mitch would be healthy for all parties involved.

The Los Angeles Chargers have a guy like that. Geno Smith has had a weird career so far. He was a starter coming out of college, but his lack of consistency has seen him become a journeyman backup for the most part. He might be able to come in and be either the second or third string quarterback for a starter who hasn’t proved he can stay healthy for all 16 games yet.

The Chargers believed that he was a great soundboard and confident backup for their franchise quarterback Phillip Rivers. Rivers is an elite quarterback that the Chargers have been using for a very long time, so to have praise for Smith like that is saying something. A guy who worked with Rivers can possibly bring over a wealth of knowledge to pass along to Mitch. Quarterback is the most position in all of sports so some depth there could be good for this team.
