Chicago Bears 2019 NFL Draft: Pre-Combine wish list
By Ryan Heckman
Guard Nate Davis, Charlotte
The Bears did themselves a favor by keeping starting guard Kyle Long around by restructuring his contract — moreover, Long did the team a bit of a favor as well. Now, he and second-year youngster James Daniels can lock down the guard position for the coming season.
Behind those two, though, the Bears could use some competition. I would assume the Bears bring back veteran Bryan Witzmann on a cheap deal, who filled in nicely for long last season. But, adding a kid with some potential to eventually take over for Long would be an ideal move.
Nate Davis is one of those picks I could see Pace making. He’s from a small school in Charlotte, but plays big-time. Pace has history of making elite selection in the later rounds, and Davis would fit that mold as he’s a candidate to go between the fourth and sixth round at the moment, depending on the outlet you trust. Davis has experience playing both guard and tackle, but fits better on the inside.
He has an ability to deliver a powerful blow, but at times can also get driven back in pass protection. Davis is much better at run blocking, but could use some coaching when it comes to shifting his body towards pass rushers.
The interesting thing, speaking of angles, is that Davis is great in space when it comes to blocking in the run game. Because the Bears generate a lot of movement pre-snap and post-snap, running RPO-style calls, Davis would fit well.
