Chicago Cubs: Comparing the Cubs and White Sox rebuilds
By Jason Parini
White Sox Trades
As we mentioned earlier, it didn’t take long at all for the White Sox to hit the reset button after the Cubs celebration commenced. Let’s take a look at the White Sox trades for prospects and youth.
Chris Sale for Luis Alexander Basabe, Victor Diaz, Michael Kopech and Yoan Moncada (December 6, 2016)
Bam. One month after the Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, the White Sox sent their ace to Boston in exchange for a wealth of talented prospects. MLB Trade Rumors described the deal as “one of the biggest Winter Meeting blockbusters in recent history,” as the deal included numerous top prospects and arguably one of the greatest pitchers of a generation. And with that, it was time to rebuild.
Adam Eaton for Dane Dunning, Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito (December 7, 2016)
Fast forward about 26 hours from the Sale trade, and the White Sox had landed more youth talent, this time for a plethora of young pitching. Outfielder Adam Eaton had been a pleasant surprise (at least offensively) since his arrival on the South Side. It worked out well for the Sox, who landed three of the top prospects in baseball at the time.
Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Matt Rose and Bryant Flete for Jose Quintana (July 13, 2017)
This may be one that the Cubs wish that they had back. The Sox landed two of the top prospects in baseball in Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease in exchange for Jose Quintana, who has been a bit of a disappointment thus far. Nonetheless, it was a major move for the White Sox. Jimenez enters the 2019 season as the No. 3 prospect in all of baseball.
