Chicago Cubs: Comparing the Cubs and White Sox rebuilds
By Jason Parini
The final breakdown
Despite the White Sox rebuild drawing large inspiration from the Cubs, there’s certainly some drastic differences in the two rebuilds. Most notably, the White Sox have stockpiled a plethora of young arms by drafting and trading for many pitching prospects.
That approach is quite the opposite of the Cubs mentality, who specifically avoided drafting pitching at the top of the draft and opted instead to acquire pitching depth through free agency and trades.
The Sox have also yet to land any big fish in free agency thus far. Though the club missed out on Manny Machado and are reportedly out on Bryce Harper, there are still plenty of options on the table for 2019. They’ll also have a large amount of spending money after 2019 with only a few million dollars on the books.
Only time will tell if the Sox rebuild will pay off, but the club is in a fantastic position to contend in the near future.
Meanwhile, the Cubs enter 2019 with the same core largely intact from their championship roster.
Perhaps we’ll check back in after 2019 to see how the rebuilds compare after any major moves. Until then, it’s time to play some ball while appreciating the fact that both Chicago teams look to have bright futures ahead of them.
