Chicago Blackhawks: Trade deadline possibilities Part III
3. Mats Zuccarello
The New York Rangers are sort of in a weird position. They are taking an approach you don’t see from NHL teams very often. They have traded away some big pieces over the last year or so, but not like most teams would if they were trying to rebuild. Instead of even calling it a rebuild, they are calling a retool.
In the last 24 months or so, they have traded Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh, JT Miller, Rick Nash, Michael Grabner and now they have a few guys on the block. Mats Zuccarello would be a great addition for the Chicago Blackhawks attack.
Zuccarello is a small player who is great at creating offense. Mats has led the Rangers in scoring before, but he is having a bit of a down year by his standards. He has had some injury issues that have limited him to 46 games so far this season. In those 46 games he has 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points.
The Rangers are a fringe lottery team this season and trading some of their top guys away could lower them in the standings even more. Zuccarello could be one of a few players on the move out of the big apple.
If the Blackhawks were to get a player like Zuccarello that would really benefit him. He is a career +37 and that is with being -11 this year on a not great Rangers team. Zuccarello could help the Blackhawks on the defensive side of the puck as well as the offensive side. Everyone knows they could use some help on the defensive side.
Due to Zuccarello having a down year on top of the Rangers feeling the need to add assets could cause him to have a relatively low price. They would likely be thrilled to have a second round pick for him and maybe a prospect that is a question mark.
Out of all the trade possibilities for the Blackhawks, this one might make the most sense. Zuccarello is a very good player who helps with offense and defense and would not be that hard to trade for. The Blackhawks only have a coupe more games and a few total days in between now and the deadline to make a decision.
