Chicago Bears: Exclusive interview with NFL Draft prospect Devin Singletary
We sat down with one of the top running back prospects in the NFL Draft, and a player that should be on the Chicago Bears’ radar.
The Chicago Bears should be in the market for a running back in this year’s NFL Draft, and it’s quite possible Devin Singletary could be their selection. We’ll get into why Singletary could, and quite frankly, should be the pick in Round 3 a little bit later, but first, a quick primer on the Bears’ current backfield situation.
While they currently project to go into 2019 with former Pro Bowl players Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen, there are multiple reasons why it makes sense for them to target a running back in this year’s draft.
First, Howard is on the final year of his rookie contract, and with the Bears’ current salary cap situation, it is unlikely they ink him to the type of deal he would probably get as a free agent.
Second, there is the commentary that Howard does not fit into Matt Nagy’s offense very well. While a fantastic player in his own right, it didn’t feel like Howard ever got into a rhythm in Nagy’s offense last season. There are concerns over whether his north and south running style fits the type of dynamic/big-play running backs that Nagy seems to favor.
In light of those factors, drafting Howard’s eventual replacement would seem like the prudent course of action. Coincidentally, Singletary, a player who fits Nagy’s offense perfectly, could be available when the Bears make their first selection at No. 87 overall. If so, the Bears would be wise to rush to the podium to make the pick.
