Chicago Bears: Potential Adrian Amos replacements
By Usayd Koshul
2. Tyrann Mathieu, Houston Texans
This one would end up being one of the more interesting signings for the Bears. A young guy, roughly Amos’ age that has more experience than any other player on this list. In fact, Tyrann Mathieu could also be the cheapest option available for the Bears.
What makes Mathieu such an interesting candidate is the versatility that he brings to the table. Throughout his career, he’s played both free and strong safety and has also played cornerback on some occasions.
This past offseason, when Mathieu signed with the Houston Texans, he signed a one-year “prove it” deal with seven-million dollars. Now, he’s set to be a free agent again and will likely want to sign a long-term deal.
As of right now, it’s unknown what type of money Mathieu is seeking. It won’t be more than what Amos or Collins want, but he is someone that when healthy is one of the premier safeties in the NFL. Does this mean Mathieu is set to cash in? Maybe. However, will he get the money he wants? Probably not, unless a team is going to overpay him.
In 2018, Mathieu totaled 89 tackles, five tackles for loss, and four quarterback hits. While he isn’t exactly a ballhawk, he’s a solid coverage safety who’ll do everything in his power to breakup passes and prevent big plays.
This offseason as the Houston Texans get ready to retool their defense there’s a chance that Tyrann Mathieu could be on the outside looking in. Even though Houston does want to bring him back, the real question is does Mathieu want to be back? Heading into the prime of his career, he may decide that playing elsewhere is best for him to rediscover the magic that made him one of the best safeties in the NFL.
