Chicago Bears: Two local 2019 NFL Draft prospects to consider
2. Max Scharping, Offensive Tackle
The Bears offense was much better than most thought it was going to be in 2018. That was largely due to the elevation in quarterback Mitchell Trubisky‘s play. In most games, he played very well and did good enough for the defense to shut down the opposition and win the game. He also put them in position to win their home game on Wild Card Weekend before, well, you know.
The engine that drives every offense in football is the offensive line. The Bears had a pretty good one in 2018. Trubisky was only sacked 26 times which is one of the least amount of times sacked by any full-time starter. Of course, like the defense, it can always be better. Look no further than Northern Illinois offensive tackle Max Scharping.
If Scharping were to be available for the Bears in any round they select in, he would be a nice piece to add for the offense to attempt keeping Trubisky on his feet and creating room for the running backs. The line is pivotal for offenses to put up points and Scharping would certainly make an impact.
Scharping could go pretty early on day two of the draft because most teams recognize that there is always value in the middle rounds when it comes to offensive and defensive lineman. Scharping could be just what teams are looking for at the tackle position, so if the Bears wanted him they might have to do it semi-early or even make a trade to go get him.
It could be an obvious advantage to the Bears to know about this guy as he played in DeKalb for NIU but it is also true that other teams will know his name as he played in a bowl game and the MAC Championship as well. Some high profile games for a mid-major school and conference.
Whether the Bears get either of these two or not is to be seen, but we can be certain that they will be on most teams radar this spring as the league looks to improve.
