Shaan Washington

The moment of the opening weekend clearly belonged to San Antonio Commanders outside linebacker, Shaan Washington. Washington applied a hit to San Diego Fleet’s quarterback Mike Bercovici (R.I.P. to Mike by the way), that de-cleated the signal-caller launched his helmet 15-yards.

Thankfully, for Mike, his head was no longer in it, though there was a brief moment that fact was still in doubt. Take a look at the hit below. Warning: the video you’re about to watch may be disturbing to certain audiences (particularly NFL rules makers and referees).

Washington finished with two total sacks on the night and a highlight to end all highlights. The former Texas A&M product is incredibly unknown. He graduated in 2016, and went undrafted, but was signed by the Minnesota Vikings. However, he never appeared in a game for the Vikes and was later cut by the team.

It is no secret the Bears will be looking for depth at the outside linebacker/edge rusher position. However, if Washington keeps laying hits on opposing quarterbacks the way he did Saturday night, he may not be on the free agent market long. He seems to be the type of player the AAF is focused on. Young players, with a lot of talent, that maybe haven’t received enough of an opportunity to succeed. Well, he’ll get that in the AAF and if he makes the most of it, could find himself on an NFL roster this season.
