Chicago Bears must re-sign these three free agents
Free Agent no. 2: Cornerback Bryce Callahan
It was a tough decision on who to leave off this list between Lynch and cornerback Bryce Callahan. Both players dealt with injuries last year, but Callahan’s was more significant.
Callahan left the week 14 game against the Los Angeles Rams with a foot injury. While it was at first not thought to be serious, it was later revealed that Callahan had broken his foot and that his season was over.
It was a devastating injury for a guy with an expiring contract who had been having a career year up until that point.
The injury may be a blessing in disguise from a re-signing standpoint, but Callahan’s absence definitely hurt the Bears defensively down the stretch last year.
The Bears have talent, but not a lot of depth at the cornerback position. While Callahan is technically not a starter, he’s the team’s nickel cornerback. That’s a formation the Bears use frequently on defense, so Callahan was on the field a lot when he was healthy.
When Callahan went down, veteran cornerback Sherrick McManis took his place in the defense. McManis is a team leader as the longest-tenured Bears player on this squad. However, he was a clear step down from Callahan even though he played well.
The Bears need more depth at this position. While Callahan will be a risky re-signing, it seems like they need to take a chance on a guy like him who was showing vast improvement before the injury.
