Chicago Bears: Ranking the four major free agents
By Usayd Koshul
2. Bobby Massie
He may not be the biggest name on the Bears roster, but he’s a leader that makes his impact known. When the Bears signed Bobby Massie back in 2016, it seemed to be one of the more underrated signings by Ryan Pace.
And so far, it’s paid off the Bears. Massie has proven to be both reliable and effective. In three seasons with the Bears, he’s missed just two games and has shown that while he may not get all the attention, he is someone that does his job.
Unfortunately, out of all the free agents that the Bears may have this offseason, there’s a chance that Massie is one of the first ones to be shown the door. The contribution that he has made cannot be overlooked as he rarely allows for opposing defensive lineman to beat him.
Looking at the current Bears roster, there is one name that could potentially replace Massie. Veteran Bradley Sowell could make a solid replacement for Massie, but he must earn his job as Sowell has never been a full-time starter for more than one season in the NFL.
If the Bears are unable to bring Massie back, then they must figure out ways to replace him in the NFL Draft rather than free agency. The biggest reason for this is that there is no point in the Bears trying to find and pay another right tackle through free agency if they are unable to retain one of their own players.
