Three Team Trade Package

The Cubs and White Sox have rarely linked up for trades in their long histories.

So how unlikely would a three-team trade involving both teams be?

In this case, maybe not as unlikely as one would assume.

Before players are discussed, the financial side of the trade would need to be cleared up. The Yankees would need some sort of financial aid with Stanton, so it’d make sense if both the Cubs and White Sox, who have a good deal of cap room, sacrificed the same amount.

Now, on to the players. The Yankees would be getting Addison Russell, a promising young shortstop whose 2018 season was marred by inconsistency, and domestic violence accusations that ended up netting him a suspension.

The Yankees willingness to accept Russell would make or break a deal. Considering the fact that Didi Gregorius is out for all of 2019 with Tommy John Surgery, they could use a shortstop. Russell is still under team control for the next few seasons, and has serious power potential.

While on the topic of power potential, Garcia would be thrown in the trade to satisfy both the Yankees need for power, and the White Sox desire to deal Garcia.

The Cubs would be receiving Stanton in the trade. We’ve already talked about his fit on the Cubs (see slide two).

The White Sox would finish the trade by receiving Sonny Gray. Gray, 29, is a former All-Star who’s coming off of, by far, the worst season of his career.

The Yankees are reportedly looking to trade Gray, and by including him in the deal, the Yankees would get Gray off their hands.

Meanwhile, the White Sox would receive a high-upside arm under team control until 2020. Gray would fit right into the White Sox rotation, and if he doesn’t pan out, they can always flip him at the deadline for prospects.

Three team deals are especially rare in the MLB, but as long as the financials work out here, the three returns satisfy all three teams needs and desires. The Hot Stove never fails to amaze us, but this trade would for sure blow the top off.
