Chicago Bears: How to take advantage of mini bye week
Self-scouting
While Matt Nagy gave his players a few extra days off to recover, the first year head coach likely didn’t take his foot off the gas. In fact, Nagy recently said at this point of the season, the coaching staff isn’t getting much sleep at all.
It’s not hard to imagine Nagy pouring over film on the trip back to Chicago from Detroit. One of the things he will look to solve is the Bears running game. While the team is ranked in the top 10 in the league offensively, they have yet to get their running game going.
That they haven’t and are still performing that well, speaks to how potent their game plan has been. While Nagy admitted recently they need to get the running game clicking, he was careful not to overstate things. The head coach admitted that facet of their game must improve, but quipped that the source of many fans’ frustration centering around the run game is likely rooted in fantasy football.
Whatever the cause of its failings (or the fans’ frustrations) Nagy and staff will have an opportunity to diagnose it with the extra time off. They will also have an opportunity to self-scout the first 11 games overall to determine what worked well and what didn’t. It’s an opportunity to fine tune what is going right, and slightly tweak those things that need to be modified to be successful.
Eventually, Nagy’s attention will turn to game planning for the New York Giants. But until that day, he’ll have a little extra free time in the lab, which should terrify the rest of the league.
