Chicago Bears vs. New York Jets: Completely serious Week 8 awards
By Sam Fels
Bryce Callahan has no right to be making plays. But he is.
Usually, when you see an unheralded player with a higher degree of swag than you might think, it’s misplaced. It’s like he’s trying to talk everyone else into thinking he’s good when he’s not, and hopefully, we’ll all buy into the ruse. Basically, I’m talking about Josh Bellamy.
But every so often there’s a player who’s too small out of a college that sounds like a rest stop (and very well might be) who just struts all over the field and then you suddenly realize he should be because damn if he isn’t ballin’ and making everyone like it.
Bryce Callahan is five-foot-nothin’ and I don’t know that he can move all that fast but there he was swatting down passes all over the field and asking Darnold if that’s all he’s got. Yeah, ok, it’s the Jets, but he’s been doing that most of the season and only seems to be getting better. It’s one of the reasons the Bears need to look at locking him up long-term with a contract extension.
It doesn’t really add up that he would be this effective, given the stature and the pedigree. But Callahan doesn’t seem to care about any of that, and he’s going to make anyone who did regret it. You go get it, son.
