Chicago White Sox: 2018 offseason blueprint
Step Three: Add a major bullpen piece
This offseason is rich with high-end relief talent.
And the White Sox could certainly use a premier piece to build a very, very young bullpen around.
Of the available names, Craig Kimbrel, Cody Allen, Zach Britton and Andrew Miller could all be great additions to the White Sox.
The best of those names, and easily the best fit on the White Sox, is Craig Kimbrel.
A several-time All-Star, Kimbrel is one of the most dominant relievers, let alone closers, in all of baseball.
With over 300 career saves in just eight seasons, Kimbrel is well on his way to a Hall-of-Fame career. As an impending free-agent, Kimbrel is due for a huge payday, potentially the biggest in history for a relief pitcher.
But if the White Sox really want to jump at any chance to win, going after Kimbrel is a must. Kimbrel has never had a bad season, has no history of injuries, and is about as good as it gets in the ninth inning. One player doesn’t change an entire pitching staff, but Kimbrel can come pretty close.
If Kimbrel is too expensive, the White Sox could go after either Miller or Allen, two veteran relievers coming off of down seasons.
Either way, the White Sox have to find a way to build up their bullpen. The young pieces are looking pretty good, but they absolutely need a premier piece to center the ‘pen. They’ll certainly have every opportunity to do just that this winter.
