#3: Mitch Trubisky

I feel like this loss isn’t mainly on quarterback Mitch Trubisky’s shoulders, but his inconsistencies under center are very frustrating to watch. Trubisky couldn’t get anything going with the passing game in the first half, but he was effective running the ball. He was the Bears leading rusher on the days with six carries for 81 yards and a touchdown.

While it’s nice to see Trubisky get things done with his feet, it’s his downfield passing that continues to be an issue for the young signal-caller. Trubisky threw two interceptions on the day, and while one was more the fault of wide receiver Josh Bellamy, the accuracy on deep passes just isn’t good enough.

Trubisky seems to really not like being pressured when he drops back to pass. He pulls the ball down to scramble a lot and often rolls out of the pocket when he doesn’t have to. I feel like this is a big contributor to his inaccuracy. Trubisky made a bad throw to wide receiver Anthony Miller early in the fourth quarter that was underthrown and intercepted.

Patriots defensive back Jonathan Jones made a great play to make a one-handed interception, but this was a ball that could’ve been a big gain or even a touchdown if thrown accurately. Trubisky continues to make both underthrown and overthrown passes to open receivers. If this team wants to get to the playoffs, that has to change dramatically.

Trubisky did play decent enough to give his team a shot to win in the end. He relied heavily on tight end Trey Burton, who had nine catches and a touchdown. Defenses will surely look to neutralize Burton in the coming weeks. In the end, Trubisky threw a hail mary to receiver Kevin White that came up just one yard short. Very apropos for this Bears season, isn’t it?

The Bears will face another AFC East team next week in the New York Jets. With the Bears suddenly sitting in fourth place in the NFC North after starting the season 3-1, this is close to a must-win game. Keep checking Da Windy City for pre and post-game coverage of this key matchup.
