Chicago Bears: 5 must-know facts about Khalil Mack trade
By Ryan Heckman
What should we expect from Mack?
A lot of fans are wondering what to expect from Mack, not only over the season as a whole, but specifically for Week 1 against the Packers. Initially, expect Mack to be rushing the quarterback a lot — like you’d expect anything less.
Mack likely won’t be dropping into coverage or shadowing a running back too often, especially since the Bears traded for him solely based on their gaping need for a guy who rushes the passer. In terms of learning the playbook, that will take a little bit of time. But, luckily for the Bears, Mack’s skillset won’t require him to do anything too in-depth.
He is what he is, and that is a guy who can wreck opposing quarterbacks.
So, in Week 1, do not expect to see the Bears do anything too intricate with Mack. Maybe a stunt here or there, but even then, he’s best when he’s coming straight off the edge. Look for Mack to be in pass-rush mode for the majority of snaps against Green Bay, and then as the season wears on, Vic Fangio will help him get accustomed to everything revolving around the Bears’ 3-4 scheme.
Here is what you can realistically expect on a seasonal basis: Mack is going to get double-digit sacks in his first year with the Bears. He’s never been on this talented of a defense. He’s never been part of such a talented linebacking corps, nor had the secondary backing him up like the Bears do. 2018 is going to be a big year for Mack, you better believe it.
