Chicago Bears: Winners and losers from Buffalo Bills game
Grant him a spot
Another player on the fringe of making the team is cornerback Doran Grant. The journeyman is not short on NFL experience, having spent time with five organizations since joining the league in 2015. However, he has had trouble finding a home, bouncing around from practice squad to practice squad.
Perhaps that’s where he ultimately ends up with the Bears, but last night he did everything he could to make a case for why he deserves a coveted roster spot. Grant was all over the field, finishing with three tackles and two passes defended. But it was his play late in the first quarter that turned some heads.
The Bears brought a blitz and appeared to have gotten A.J. McCarron out of rhythm. He threw to his receiver who had sat down near the sideline next to the first down marker. What McCarron didn’t see was Grant break on the ball as soon as the receiver stopped and before McCarron delivered the ball.
Had that been a double move, it almost certainly would have gone for a touchdown. However, Grant trusted his eyes and his instincts and made a play on the ball. The result was an interception which he took to the house for six the other way.
Whether Grant makes the team remains to be seen. He is still battling Kevin Tolliver and Michael Joseph for what appears to be the last cornerback spot. You may remember Tolliver came out of the gates strong with some great performances in practice. However, Grant’s final impression on the coaching staff may be the lasting one.
