Chicago Bears: 5 most consistent players during 2018 NFL Preseason
By Ryan Heckman
Outside Linebacker Isaiah Irving
As a Bears fan, there has been no more frustrating of a position this summer than outside linebacker. At one point, we could at least have been able to say: “Man, at least we have Leonard Floyd.”
Sure, Floyd should be back by Week 1, even if it means playing with his hand wrapped in a club of some sorts. But, that’s not 100 percent health for a guy who was legitimately the Bears’ only steady pass rusher — and once again, that’s when he’s healthy.
For this reason, Isaiah Irving has been a pleasant surprise. I think I speak for all Bears fans when I say I’d love to see him have a fair shot at not only playing a decent amount against Green Bay, but even getting the starting nod.
Irving has looked much stronger and added a bit of bulk over the offseason, and it has paid off. He’s been able to continue and use his speed to bend around the edge, but he’s also been able to out-muscle his man on multiple occasions.
Irving looks every bit of a natural pass rusher if the Bears ever had one besides Floyd. He not only should be a lock for the roster, but he should be on the field in the regular season early and often.
