Chicago Bears: 10 players fighting for roster spot vs. Buffalo Bills
By Ryan Heckman
Running Back Taquan Mizzell
As I stated above, Mizzell is in competition right now with both Nall and likely Burton. It remains to be seen whether Nagy will keep four running backs or three running backs and a fullback. By now, you know where I stand on this issue. But, I’m not the coach.
Thus far in preseason, Mizzell has gotten a huge workload. Watching him play, Mizzell doesn’t do anything too impressive in any aspect of the game. He isn’t overly quick with his cuts. He doesn’t appear to have that breakaway speed, nor does he excel in the passing game.
He really doesn’t do anything that Benny Cunningham can’t do, so I don’t see a spot for him on this roster. But, that’s where this last preseason game comes into play. If he comes out and has a huge game, Mizzell may be a candidate for the practice squad.
The fact that he has gotten a lot of playing time throughout August tells me one thing about MIzzell: The coaching staff is intrigued by him. They want to get as long of a look at him as possible before making their final decision. It’s either that, or they could have wanted other teams to get a lot of his work on tape in order to potentially facilitate a trade.
If Mizzell plays a lot against the Bills, that might not be a good sign. Hopefully he makes the most of it.
