Chicago Bears: 10 players fighting for roster spot vs. Buffalo Bills
By Ryan Heckman
Tight End Ben Braunecker
Another battle that is heating up is at the tight end position. Ben Braunecker and Daniel Brown are likely competing for the fourth and final tight end spot, unless a somewhat surprising cut is made like releasing Dion Sims.
Of course, Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen are locks. Actually, the injury to Shaheen just might help Braunecker out a bit. If it ends up being more serious in the coming days, the Bears could elect to keep both Brown and Braunecker for the time being.
People don’t like talking about Brown getting cut, but it could very well happen. Braunecker has impressed me so far throughout both training camp and his preseason play. No, it isn’t just his game-winning touchdown catch from Chase Daniel against the Denver Broncos.
He is a seriously talented athlete. At that position, and in this offense, an athlete who has proven he can catch the football might just take the cake over the sure-handed Brown.
So far, Braunecker has gotten a heck of a lot of playing time throughout the preseason. I don’t think that is a negative thing, either. I really believe he has a shot to make this team and that the staff wants to throw everything they can at him to ensure he can handle the offense.
