Sign free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland

Another training camp battle that I have enjoyed watching throughout the month of August is the race for the remaining cornerback spots. Obviously, the Bears are set with Kyle Fuller, Prince Amukamara and Bryce Callahan. But, behind them they have veterans like Cre’von LeBlanc, Marcus Cooper, Doran Grant and Sherrick McManis.

On top of the veterans, they have younger guys like Kevin Toliver II, Michael Joseph and John Franklin III. Somehow, veteran free agent Bashaud Breeland is still available.

Breeland had one of the better seasons last year as a slot corner, and would provide great depth behind Callahan. He might even be used in additional packages or could spell a starter in case of an injury.

Personally, from the tape I’ve seen on Breeland, I would much rather have him than most of the above names. I like LeBlanc a lot, and I think he makes the roster. I also like some of what I’ve seen from Grant and Joseph. But, those players will likely make their impact on special teams.

Breeland is someone you could toss in on defense and not worry like you would with maybe one of the younger players. He would be well-worth taking a flier on, especially if the coaches aren’t completely sold on their group — I know I’m not 100 percent sold.
