Chicago Bears: 5 players who must not make final roster
By Ryan Heckman
Cornerback Marcus Cooper
Do I really have to explain this one? Can we just be done, here?
Alright, fine.
Veteran cornerback Marcus Cooper will probably go down in Bears fans’ memories for one special moment. That moment came on an afternoon early last season where the Bears took on the Pittsburgh Steelers at Soldier Field.
The Steelers looked as though they would pull within three points after lining up for a chip shot field goal just before halftime. The kick was blocked. Cooper picked it up and had nothing but green in front of him.
Then, he made the poor decision to slow down as though he would start celebrating a bit too early — as in, just inches short of the goal line. The ball was knocked out from behind, he did not score a touchdown, and the rest is history.
Aside from that moment, Cooper has been flat-out bad on most occasions. Like I said in reference to Franklin earlier, the Bears have tons of players yearning for a spot on the roster at this position, and Cooper has no higher a ceiling than any of them.
Cooper needs to go. Younger guys should be kept and will play important roles on special teams and as reserves to guys like Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara.
