Chicago Bears 53-Man Roster Projection 3.0: Who makes the cut?
By Ryan Heckman
Cornerbacks
Starters: Kyle Fuller, Prince Amukamara, Bryce Callahan
This group is on lockdown. Fuller and Amukamara return as an underrated duo looking to take this defense even higher than its 10th-ranked position last year. Callahan was one of the best slot corners in the league when healthy.
Backups: Cre’von LeBlanc, Doran Grant, Michael Joseph
At this point, I think it makes sense keeping a couple of the undrafted rookies. Bears fans have been looking for excuses to wave goodbye to Marcus Cooper and Sherrick McManis, and finally we might get our chance. Kevin Toliver is a guy who could barely miss the cut as his performance against the Broncos was one to forget. He was beaten multiple times, including on a touchdown catch by Courtland Sutton.
Safeties
Starters: Adrian Amos, Eddie Jackson
Like a couple other spots, these two don’t need a whole lot said about them. One of the best, young safety tandems in the league should take a step forward along with the defense as a whole.
Backups: Deon Bush, Deiondre’ Hall
Bush had a great camp and has made some plays in the preseason, making him a lock for the roster. Hall, though, didn’t have his best game against Denver. I still think he makes the cut over DeAndre Houston-Carson.
Specialists
Kicker: Cody Parkey
All I can say is, this guy better start showing me he can hit the 50-yard kicks. Otherwise, we might have another kicking epidemic on our hands. Soldier Field is not an easy place to kick by any means.
Punter: Pat O’Donnell
Not much competition here.
Long Snapper: Patrick Scales
See above comment.
Wrapping it up
Who do you think we missed on? Which cuts would surprise you most? This is not an easy task, and I do not envy coach Nagy one bit. As the rest of the preseason unfolds, we will continue to keep you updated as to where we think the roster is headed.
