Most Chicago Cubs rumors have died down right about now, but the team could still make a few trades this month. We have the reason behind such moves.

This past week has been a big one for Chicago Cubs baseball.

After a thrilling walk-off Grand Slam win on Sunday night, the Cubs split a two-game series with the second-place Milwaukee Brewers.

Then, the Cubs won back-to-back 1-0 games in Pittsburgh against the Pirates, extending their central division lead to 4.5 games.

More from Da Windy City

While their current lead in the standings is their biggest of the season, the central is certainly not safely in the Cubs hands. A 4.5-game lead is by no means a comfortable one.

Last month’s deadline acquisitions have played a big role in the Cubs resurgence; Cole Hamels has a 0.72 ERA in his first four starts with the Cubs — four games that would end up as wins for the Cubs.

Jesse Chavez has been a major part of the Cubs’ bullpen since coming over from the Rangers, as the 34-year old has a 1.76 ERA in 11 appearances in a Cubs uniform.

Although the performance of the new additions is a great sign, questions still remain for the postseason. The bullpen hasn’t been consistent for much of the season, and doesn’t look nearly as strong as in recent years.

While the starting lineup looks good, the bench is lacking any source of speed or power hitting.
