Chicago Bears: Players on roster bubble to watch vs. Denver Broncos
By Ryan Heckman
Cornerback depth becoming interesting
If you judge by the last unofficial depth chart released by the Bears, Marcus Cooper is completely safe. However, if you look at how he performed in his second preseason game and, most importantly, joint practices against the Broncos, it would tell a different story.
Cooper simply shouldn’t make this team, but his veteran status has made him tough to get rid of. Before the Bears added a few undrafted guys to the mix, there was no way Cooper was losing a spot on the roster.
However, the Bears did indeed add a few names like Kevin Toliver, Michael Joseph and Doran Grant to the mix. Of all those guys, Toliver looks the most promising, but Joseph and Grant have turned some heads as well.
I’ll be watching all four of those guys on Saturday night, as the Bears will obviously keep Kyle Fuller, Prince Amukamara, Bryce Callahan and most likely Cre’von LeBlanc. Another name to keep an eye on who may get cut is veteran Sherrick McManis.
These youngsters could end up pushing a pair of veterans off the roster in McManis and Cooper. In fact, I expect that to happen. Barring a near-perfect performance from either Cooper or McManis, or the exact opposite from one of the kids, I don’t see the veterans making it out of August as a member of the Bears.
