Chicago Bears: 3 bold predictions for Roquan Smith
Defensive Rookie of the Year is Smith’s to lose
Smith entered the draft as the most pro-ready player. That’s saying something, considering he was in the same class as Bradley Chubb. Not only that, but he was also regarded by some as the best player in the entire draft. That is just one reason why he will win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award this year.
He is also someone who flies all over the field. He represents what most anticipate will be the new mold of the modern-day NFL linebacker. Some experts wondered if he is too small to be successful in the NFL. Those individuals are used to middle linebackers being physical specimens. However, with the way the game is being played, there is more value being placed on fast, versatile linebackers who can play coverage.
In fact, Smith’s skill-set is part of the reason I predicted earlier that he will lead the team in tackles. If he leads the team in tackles, it will put him in the range of 90-100. That would be an impressive haul for a rookie and is not only possible but in my opinion, probable for Smith.
Some may wonder whether the holdout will limit his overall production. Personally, I don’t think it will have any impact, but for reference, consider this: Joey Bosa won the award having held out for longer and only playing 12 games, due in part to injury. Granted he had 10.5 sacks, but the point is, the lengthy holdout didn’t affect his performance.
The fact of the matter is talent is talent and you can’t hold that down for long. And one thing we know for sure is that Smith oozes talent. Fans should be thrilled to have him in camp and I, for one, can’t wait to see what he will do this year. Welcome to Chicago, Roquan.
