Amos or Bush?

Bears Twitter was on fire recently over the debate of whether Adrian Amos was an elite safety. Fans dug in and argued vehemently for their position. Mud was slung, tears were shed, and followers were blocked. The instigator in all of that was Pro Football Focus’ grade on Amos, who they essentially have as an elite safety.

Fortunately, Bears Twitter emerged intact and all appears quiet on that front — at least for now. However, there is a risk that this debate will rage-on following Thursday’s game. That’s because there has been some speculation as to whether Deon Bush could actually steal Amos’ starting spot at safety.

Since Thursday is the first time starters will play, we will get to see who lines up at safety for the defense. If it is Deon Bush, that will be incredibly telling and will no doubt spark debate on Friday morning.

If Bush continues to lay the wood on opposing players the way he did last Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens, Amos’ job could be in jeopardy. For now, Amos appears to have the spot secured so it’ll be interesting to see how Nagy and Vic Fangio use Bush on Thursday.

Even if he doesn’t play with the first unit, he will get the majority of the snaps, as the starters aren’t expected to play very long. Therefore, it’ll be fascinating to see what he does with that opportunity. If he plays well again, he could keep pushing Amos.
