Trade Package No. 1

Mack is going to cost an arm and a leg, most likely. Even if his holdout goes deep into August, I don’t see a way he doesn’t give Oakland a huge haul in return. One of the guys who is in a similar situation at the moment is Seattle Seahawks free safety Earl Thomas.

The differences between the two cases, though, are huge. First, Mack is two years younger. Second, Mack plays a much more important position. This league is a passing league, and if you cannot rush the passer, you won’t find much success on the defensive side of the ball.

The first package is pretty straight forward. No other players are involved — just picks.

Some may scoff at the idea of giving up multiple first-round selections. For me, I think the price is a bit high as well. However, the payoff in the future could be enormous. The Bears have a lot of pieces in place already, and Mack could be one of the final pieces to the puzzle in winning a Super Bowl a couple of years down the road.

Mack comes to Chicago, while Ryan Pace ships off two first-round picks and a fifth-rounder for good measure. It’s a steep price, but the dividends could be well-worth reaping.
