Chicago Bears Rumors: Potential trade packages for Earl Thomas
By Ryan Heckman
Where Thomas fits
If the Bears were to figure out a deal for Thomas, where exactly would he fit? Of course, Adrian Amos is locked-and-loaded at the strong safety position. But, the Bears also have Eddie Jackson at free safety already and seem thrilled with where his career is headed.
To clear up that obvious confusion, Jackson would either be part of a deal or would be on the trade block immediately following the transaction — but, more on that later.
Over the course of Thomas’ career, one thing has been certain: He is a playmaker with the ability to turn games on their heads. One of the major weaknesses of this Bears defense (which finished top 10 last year, I will remind you) is the lack of turnovers generated. For whatever reason, this group has had a tough time coming up with the ball.
That has never been a problem for Thomas. Rest assured, the Bears would generate more turnovers with him on the field. That’s a fact.
Over his eight NFL seasons, Thomas has come up with 25 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He has managed to score a pair of defensive touchdowns and has also defended 64 passes.
Thomas is the jack-of-all-trades free safety. His vision is second to none. His anticipation is second to none. He is without a doubt the best free safety in this league today, period. He would absolutely start ahead of Jackson, assuming Jackson was unable to be moved. Thomas would immediately become the most talented player on this Bears defense.
