Chicago Cubs Rumors: Latest pair of trade targets prior to deadline
By Ryan Heckman
RHP Kirby Yates, San Diego Padres
It was just a few weeks ago when the Cubs were linked to former San Diego Padres reliever Brad Hand. Now that Hand has been dealt to the Cleveland Indians, the Cubs might have their sights set on yet another Padres reliever, Kirby Yates.
Over the course of his fifth year in the Majors, Yates has put together his best year yet. In 39.1 innings pitched, Yates has given up just seven runs on 24 hits — with only one home run given up. He has struck out 50 batters while walking just 11 — quite impressive.
The Cubs should be rather familiar with Yates as of late, since he tossed two shutout innings in two appearances against them just a couple of weeks ago. Over the month of July, Yates has given up four earned runs in just over five innings pitched — but take a look at his month of June.
In June, Yates boasted an ERA of 0.00 — that’s right, zero. In 14.0 innings pitched during June, Yates gave up only six hits while striking out 15 and walking three.
July was the only month this season Yates saw his ERA go above 1.50, believe it or not. He has been near-lights out throughout his 2018 campaign. It’s no wonder the Cubs have been scouting him as of late.
With the deadline just hours away now, we will keep you updated if the Cubs make any moves. Chances are, any move made could include one of the aforementioned names. We shall see.
