Chicago Cubs Rumors: 3 risky trade deadline moves
Risky Move Number Two: Trade for Kevin Gausman, Mychal Givens
Remember the last time the Cubs and Orioles made a trade involving a young, struggling right handed starting pitcher?
A Cy-Young Award and World Series Championship later, the Cubs clearly won the 2013 Jake Arrieta trade with the Orioles.
This time around, the Cubs and Orioles are in different situations. The Cubs are contending for a World Series, while the Orioles are are the worst team in baseball.
The Cubs and Orioles could once again be trade partners for just that reason. Additionally, the Orioles have several pitchers who could be on the move in the coming days.
The Cubs, who could still use a rotation addition and certainly at least one ‘pen arm, could be interested in a pair of Orioles arms.
The first is Kevin Gausman. The fifth-overall pick in the 2012 draft, Gausman hasn’t quite lived up to his former top pick production.
However, Gausman, at the age of 27, has had a solid 2018 season despite the Orioles dismal season. The righty is 5-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 21 starts. Gausman is under team control through 2021, and has been rumored to be the subject of trade talks throughout the past few weeks.
The other Orioles arm is Mychal Givens. Givens, a 28-year old reliever, is in his fourth big league season.
The right-hander has struggled in 2018, with a 4.53 ERA, but had a sub-3.50 ERA in each of his first three seasons.
With a big fastball and sharp slider, Givens could be the perfect setup man for the Cubs in the final months of the season.
Givens is under control through 2021 as well, and like Gausman, carries big value despite a tough season.
It wouldn’t be cheap for the Cubs, but a package including top pitching prospect Adbert Alzolay and fifth-ranked prospect Aramis Ademan, a shortstop, could be enough to convince the Orioles to part with the two controllable arms.
