Chicago Bears: 5 takeaways after week one of training camp
Miller impressing early
Perhaps to a fault, I’ve been very excited to see what this current draft class can do once it hits the field. Each selection has the opportunity to make a huge impact on this team. From the obvious Roquan Smith, down to Javon Wims and everyone in between, this squad could really impress.
However, early in camp, one particular rookie is standing out for his performance. With Roquan Smith absent from camp due to not signing, the focus has been on second-round pick Anthony Miller, whom the Bears trade up to get.
So far, he is validating Pace’s decision to move up. Leading up to the draft, I profiled Miller and how he was a perfect fit for Matt Nagy’s offense. The main reason he’s a perfect fit is his outstanding route running ability. Miller runs precision routes and puts himself exactly where he needs to be to make the catch.
So far, the word out of camp is that Miller is showing off that ability to the delight of Bears’ fans and dismay of their defensive backs. Take a look at the clip above. Miller sheds Amukamara’s attempt to jam him at the line of scrimmage and still gets off well. Then, his cut is so precise, he shakes Prince so much that it takes a half-second for him to reemerge in the frame.
Social media is replete with videos showing off Miller’s performance at camp. While fans must exercise caution and not get too excited about early camp performers, the reality is this is what most expected of Miller. So the fact that he’s able to do on the field what we saw on tape, is very encouraging.
