Chicago Cubs: How to lessen impact of Kris Bryant injury
By Patrick Voss
With the Chicago Cubs placing third baseman Kris Bryant back on the 10-Day disabled list, where does this leave the Cubs in the hunt for the playoffs?
Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant has been assigned to the 10-day disabled list with repeat left-shoulder inflammation. Now the question remains; how will these injuries to the Cubs’ star hitter affect the tightly contested National League Central — and more importantly — the Cubs’ playoff chances.
Bryant has struggled this season with a shoulder injury that may very well impact the route the Cubs take in order to reach playoff glory. One name that has floated around — and will be making his re-debut for the Cubs — is David Bote. Bote had posted a .310 batting average in 42 plate appearances with the Cubs this season. But what can Bote offer that no other minor-league player can?
Iowa Cubs third baseman/second baseman David Bote has amassed — as recently noted — a .310 batting average in only 42 plate appearances in the Majors so far this season. Bote has a giant opportunity to impress the Cubs organization with this 10-day disabled list stint for Bryant. And I would argue that the Cubs should find a way to keep him on the roster as he may be the missing link to a Cubs playoff push again this year.
Another option that has floated around — in Bryant’s absence — is bolstering the pitching rotation. Although it looks like J.A. Happ might be gone, other options — like Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman — may be the extra boost the Cubs need to stamp their invite to a fourth-straight National League Championship Series in this year’s playoffs.
