Chicago Bears Training Camp: 5 recent standout players
By Ryan Heckman
Wide Receiver Tanner Gentry
It is no secret that second-year wideout Tanner Gentry is a fan favorite at training camp. Not just this year, so far, but last year as well. The former Wyoming standout became a guy whom fans watched closely last year as he had proven to be one of the hardest working players on the practice field.
This year is no different. Gentry, once again, is setting out to work his tail off and prove he belongs in the NFL. We all remember the deep touchdown pass from Mitch Trubisky last year. It seems like that’s all Gentry does, whether it’s in practice or a game — he makes big plays.
With two defenders on him, Gentry stayed focused on the ball in the above play and came up with the grab in traffic. For a smaller guy, he certainly makes big-time plays.
One thing that has struck me about Gentry so far in camp is his ability to beat his man. Regardless of who he’s going up against, Gentry has regularly gotten open on the majority of his routes — and he catches the football.
With question marks on the bottom half of the depth chart at receiver, Gentry may have a shot to continue and work his way up. Still, it’s more likely he ends up on the practice squad once again. But, if his first few practices are any indication, he’s going to compete incredibly hard for a roster spot. I, for one, would be thrilled to see him get it.
