Before putting together a specific package, it’s important to assess exactly what any package for Abreu might contain. Based off of Abreu’s contract, value and current role on the White Sox, a loaded return should contain:

  • Headliner: A top-75 prospect — potentially a long-term option at first base. Depending on which team, this should be one of the receiver’s top prospects.
  • Second piece: Either a former Top-100 prospect that has since produced in the major leagues, or a current Top-100 prospect.
  • Sweetener: Either two lower-ranking prospects or a top-10 prospect from the receiving team

Obviously the packages will vary depending on team, but any trade involving Abreu would look somewhat like this.

In terms of potential suitors for Abreu, any contending team with a hole at first base should immediately be considered a suitor. The Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals are all potential takers for Abreu.

As a matter of fact, both the Astros and the Rockies have had documented interest in Abreu ever since the Cuban slugger hit the market in the winter of 2013. Recently, the Astros have been rumored to be interested in a potential trade for Abreu, even with the red-hot Yuli Gurriel at first base.

Now that we’ve assessed a few suitors and a return outline, lets look at a few potential trades packages for Abreu.
