Chicago Blackhawks: 6 potential moves to get back to contention
By Clay Swallow
Trading Hossa is good for both the present and Future
Trading Marian Hossa’s contract in a cap-dump move is rumored to be one of the Blackhawks’ top priorities, and why wouldn’t it be? Moving Hossa would free up just over $5 million dollars in cap space that they can use to sign some of the players mentioned above. Hossa’s contract coming off the books would be huge for the Hawks’ chances of landing someone like (James) Van Riemsdyk.

Moving Hossa’s contract would also greatly help the Hawks in the future because they have some great young talent in Nick Schmaltz, Dylan Sikura, and Alex DeBrincat that they will have to give extensions to in the next two years. With Hossa’s contract out of the way, that task becomes much easier.
What would it take to move his contract? Well, if the Hawks can find a team desperate to reach the cap floor to avoid any cap penalties (i.e, Ottowa, New York if Tavares leaves, or Carolina) then they could get him off of their hand without throwing in a huge talent like DeBrincat or Schmaltz.
The best-case scenario for Chicago is that they trade Hossa and one of their young defensive prospects such as Jan Rutta, Chad Krys or Gustav Forsling in exchange for a late-round pick. The Hawks would clear cap space and the other team gets a good young prospect to help them down the road when they are trying to contend again. Sounds like a deal to me.
