Cons

Alright, let’s address the elephant in the room. We aren’t talking about the most ideal scoring guard in the league. Smart is not a shooter. In his four years, he has failed to top 36 percent shooting in a season — no, that’s not from beyond the arc.

Smart has never been a scorer. That’s not who he is. So, if the Bulls are looking for a two guard that can score, they better look elsewhere. Smart’s career-high in points per game is just 10.6, which came two years ago.

What makes matters worse is the fact that his shot selection is almost as bad as J.R. Smith‘s at times. It’s mind-boggling how someone so smart, so driven on the defensive end can take such bad shots.

On top of the issue with his scoring inabilities, Smart is somewhat of a hot head. In his four seasons, he’s accrued 18 technicals. Last year, he only received two. The year prior, though, he was dealt nine of them. While his passion can be used for the best, at times, it’s used for quite the opposite. We’ve seen Smart in altercations with just about everybody, even referees.

The Bulls could use the defensive grit and intensity, but is Smart worth the ineptitude on offense and the attitude at times? It’s a tough call, especially because he likely won’t come too cheap. All in all, I wouldn’t mind bringing him in. The Bulls need a player like Smart, taking the good with the bad. Right now, the most intense player they’ve got is Bobby Portis. Can you imagine those two on the floor together in a close game? That’d be fun.
