Chicago Bulls fans will focus their attention on the team’s two first-round picks. But what storylines could affect who they select?

The Chicago Bulls are hours away from the 2018 NBA Draft. They currently hold the no. 7 and No. 22 overall picks. Over the previous weeks and months, there has been ample discussion over who they should select.

Prognosticators have offered their opinion (solicited or otherwise) on who is the best player or best fit for the Bulls. I suspect you have read countless mock drafts each recounting the reasons why the Bulls should or will draft a particular player.

What you may not have read is how various storylines that have, and are continuing to develop, will have an impact on those picks. We all know the draft does not happen in a vacuum. You are probably familiar with the concept of the “butterfly effect.”

This is the theory that a small change in a complex system can have a huge impact somewhere else in that system. Well the NBA, even though it’s only made up of 30 teams, is a complex system.

Therefore, the smallest change or event could disrupt the delicate balance that is a team’s “big board.” Those “events” have likely been occurring across the league over the past few months. The result could be a huge impact on the draft. Certainly, the Bulls have prepared for countless scenarios and developed contingencies. We take a look at three storylines to watch on draft night that could cause the Bulls to activate those contingency plans.
