It begins and ends with GarPax

While there are multiple reasons for Bulls fans to be concerned, they all originate from the same source – GarPax. While it may sound like an antibiotic, it certainly hasn’t cured the Bulls draft woes of late. In fact, it has been the cause.

Gar Forman and John MacBeth Paxson make up the infamous duo who will determine who the Bulls select. Paxson, the Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, and Forman, the General Manager will put their collective heads together next Thursday in Brooklyn. Though recently, their draft picks have made fans want to put their heads together in the same way Moe put Larry’s and Curly’s heads together.

That’s because of their recent draft history. Over the last five years, the Bulls have selected the following players in the first round: Tony SnellJusuf Nurkic and Gary Harris (traded for Doug McDermott), Bobby Portis, Denzel Valentine, and Lauri Markkanen (though technically, the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Markkanen then trade him to Chicago).

That’s not exactly a murderer’s row of first-round draft picks. In fact, if GarPax didn’t execute the draft night trade for Markkanen, this list would likely be considerably worse. Yet, this is the “brain trust” that will make two picks in the first round. Bill Parcells once famously said, “you are what your record says you are.” If that is true, looking at the draft record of this terrible twosome, what is GarPax? Better yet, why should Bulls fans have any hope or optimism that they will get it right this year?

The short answer is they shouldn’t. Rather, they should hope that the Bulls have a successful draft in spite of them. Perhaps the stars will align and the board will shake out in a way that drops a superstar in their laps. Or maybe Bulls fans wake up the following morning disappointed. Unfortunately, history suggests that latter.
