Chicago Bears should consider these still-available free agents
By Ryan Heckman
2. Defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins
The Bears may have high hopes for guys like Roy Robertson-Harris and Jonathan Bullard. They might also see a lot of potential in rookie Bilal Nichols — as do I. But, without any surefire starter at the defensive end position aside from Akiem Hicks, the Bears also need more competition here.
Johnathan Hankins is one of the bigger mysteries right now. At one point, it looked like there were some pretty serious rumors about the Bears signing him. What’s even more odd is the fact that the Indianapolis Colts voided his contract this offseason after signing him just a year ago.
After a relatively mediocre 2016 season with the New York Giants, Hankins was a stud for the Colts in 2017. The former Ohio State Buckey is still just 26 years old and is arguably the best run stuffer on the market right now.
I guess, I am not sure what is going on with Hankins right now. I don’t see anything not to like, quite honestly. He should absolutely have a job. He isn’t aging, he doesn’t have any off-field issues that we know of and his production was fantastic last year. If I am Pace, I’d definitely keep Hankins in mind — no, actually, I’d bring him in now, before another team does.
