3 reasons the Chicago Bulls should let Zach LaVine walk
What would you say you do here?
When I think of LaVine’s role on this team, I’m reminded of the cult classic Office Space. As Tom Smykowski frantically tries to justify his existence at Initech, the “Bobs” famously ask him “what would you say you do here?”
To me, the same question of LaVine is warranted. Granted it was in limited action, but this year LaVine shot only 38 percent from the field and only 34 percent from three-point range. The problem with blaming a lack of playing time is that these numbers aren’t a huge deviation from his career averages.
Simply put, he’s not a very productive player and he’s not a very good shooter. He also struggles mightily on defense, has trouble finishing around the rim when he’s not above it and stops all ball movement. So back to the opening question, what is it that he does for the Bulls that make him worth a huge contract?

In addition, LaVine seems to have butted heads with Kris Dunn during the season. Each player was trying to assert himself as the “alpha-dog” or leader of the team. As I pointed out in an earlier piece, this is Markkanen’s team. While he may not have that “alpha-dog” personality, make no mistake that this team and its offense runs through him. Therefore, LaVine’s efforts to take over as “the guy” seem misguided at best. Yet, here are the Bulls ready to give him a contract to make him think he is.
