Jalen Brunson, Villanova

Let’s speak in terms of a relevant happening among the game of basketball. The Golden State Warriors won yet another NBA title this past week, and an enormous part of their run over the years has been due to the outstanding play of point guard Stephen Curry.

Remember some of the scouting reports on Curry?

  • Average size
  • Needs to put on some weight
  • Not very athletic

Alright, you get the point. I won’t go too in-depth with Curry’s pre-draft process, but the same has been said about Villanova point guard Jalen Brunson. Right now, Brunson should be a later first-round selection in the upcoming draft. He’s been knocked for the above reasons, just like Curry was a few years back.

But, aside from the physical attributes, Brunson is arguably just as good as any other point guard in the draft when it comes to the major characteristics. Brunson can light up the scoreboard quickly. He shot over 40 percent from beyond the arc last season, so let’s chalk that up as a huge reason to like Brunson, first and foremost.

Like Curry, Brunson is phenomenal at changing speeds offensively. His footwork and feel for running an offense is noticeably elite. Let’s be honest, he’s a guy who has a track record of one thing and one thing only: Winning.

If Brunson was the pick at no. 22 overall, I would be thrilled. There are a lot more positives than negatives when evaluating Brunson, and I would consider him a steal at that spot.
