As the Chicago Bears approach minicamp, we take a look at the biggest challenges Mitch Trubisky will face in year two.

The Chicago Bears began minicamp this week amid a level of optimism that has not existed around the team for a while. In fact, the lovefest has been so widespread, you might have forgotten just how miserable things were last year.

Since the end of last season, there has been a deluge of good news and positive energy coming out of Halas Hall. It began with the hiring of Matt Nagy and his staff. It has continued throughout OTAs with news of the progression of Leonard Floyd, Allen Robinson, and Kevin White.

One additional bright spot among a sea of them has been Mitch Trubisky. Teammates new and old have sung his praises throughout the offseason. Trey Burton even compared him in many respects to Carson Wentz. Taylor Gabriel went so far as to tacitly compare him to Matt Ryan. Take a look at the following quotes from Patrick Finley’s recent article in the Chicago Sun-Times:

"“There’s just so many similarities between the both of them — a lot more similarities than opposites. The way he takes command, he’s a natural leader, his arm strength, his ability to run, his elusiveness in the pocket — there are a lot of things that are similar.” Trey Burton comparing Trubisky to Wentz"

"“It’s been good, just coming from Matt Ryan, that type of high-tier quarterback, and coming here. Just to see the development of [Trubisky] and the growth and the leadership, it’s surprising. It’s exciting to go out there and watch him go through his reads, not just stay locked into one receiver.” Taylor Gabriel comparing Trubisky to Ryan"

To be sure, I am not here to throw a collective wet blanket on the party. However, there are a number of challenges awaiting Trubisky now and when he steps on the field for his first pre-season game. In fact, it would be naive to think the season will go as smoothly as the offseason has. With that in mind, we take a look at the five biggest challenges he faces, and how he’ll respond.
