Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo made a questionable play against the Pirates Monday, and fans responded pretty poorly via Twitter.

As we all took time to honor those who have served our beautiful country on Monday, the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates took the field in a Memorial Day battle. The Cubs ended up victorious in what was a pretty one-sided game. But, after all was said and done, it was more than the final score that had Pirates fans upset.

The Cubs won the contest 7-0, but during the top of the eighth inning is where all the real drama began. The bases were loaded with Anthony Rizzo standing on third, and when Chris Gimenez hit what looked like a double play grounder, the craziness broke loose.

Rizzo slid into Pirates catcher Elias Diaz after clearly being out, launching a storm of controversy regarding the first baseman. Was the play dirty? That’s the debate. If you ask Pirates fans, I’m certain you will figure out their side of the story.

This is a radio show in Pittsburgh asking their listeners whether or not the Pirates should hit Rizzo in their next matchup on Tuesday. I understand the frustration when any of these types of plays occur, but this might be a little too far. If you truly believe it was a dirty play, be the bigger person and take the high road, right?

Leave it to a guy in St. Louis to give a take like this. Rizzo a dirty player? I’d like to think the opposite, but then again, I’m not the one aggressively cheering against the Cubs on a regular basis. They have truly become a team to hate, if you’re a fan of any divisional rival. It’s tough being in a division with a team full of young, talented players like the Cubs, isn’t it?

I’ve seen Rizzo called a lot of things, but “classless” has never been one of them to hold much merit. We are talking about the guy who donated $3.5 million — million — to Lurie Children’s Hospital in effort to help kids and their families not only cope with cancer, but defeat it.

Yes, this is the same guy who called his venture with the Children’s Hospital “much bigger than winning a World Series.”

Now, we’re calling him classless? You have to be kidding me. You can be angry. You can be upset. You can be hurt. You can be sad. You can be a lot of things, but don’t go calling one of the classiest players in all of baseball classless.

Speaking of cancer, take a look at one more tweet to top it all off — and this one is a doozie.

Somebody went out of their way to retweet the video of Rizzo’s slide accompanied by a claim that he faked his battle with cancer as an 18-year-old prospect a few years ago.

I’ll leave you with this: Anyone who has the nerve to poke fun at something like a young kid battling cancer need some serious help. There is much more that could be said about someone like that, but again, we’re talking about taking the high road, here, right?
