White Sox: 3 targets at No. 4 pick in 2018 Draft
Alec Bohm, 3B – Wichita State
Another player that has been linked to the Chicago White Sox is Wichita State third baseman, Alec Bohm. Bohm, who sits opposite of Nick Madrigal on the size spectrum is listed as 6-foot-5, 220 pounds. Without a doubt, Bohm is a pure power hitter, and any team drafting him would be doing so strictly for his bat, as his defense leaves a lot to be desired.
Defense is by far Bohm’s largest weakness, leading scouts to wonder if he would even be able to play third base at the next level. He lacks the lateral quickness to react at the hot corner and has a below average arm for the position.
By this point, you might be wondering why he’s slated as a top-five pick with those defensive limitations. Well, his bat is that good. The White Sox could easily plug him into the middle of the lineup for years to come.
This year for the Shockers he hit .339, with16 home runs, and drove in 55 runs. Watching him hit, he has the look of a player who is in command in the batter’s box. In an era drunk off of launch angles, Bohm, for the most part, maintains the same posture through his swing. In this regard, he is very similar to Miguel Cabrera who maintains a more level posture to the ball and gets his lift on the follow through.
Due to some of his defensive issues, Bohm projects to slide over to first base at the next level. While Jose Abreu currently occupies that position, there is some speculation that the Sox could look to move him to a contender before the trade deadline.
