His first chance in the NFL comes with the Bears

John Franklin III, DB/KR

John Franklin III is best-known for appearing on the Netflix series “Last Chance U,” but the former college quarterback is now looking to make a name for himself in the NFL. Franklin has spent time with several schools as part of a colored background. Having played for East Mississippi Community College, Florida State, Florida Atlantic and of course the Tigers, Franklin has made the rounds as part of his collegiate career.

Franklin comes from a background playing both quarterback and wide receiver, but due to his shortcomings at both of those positions (they range widely), he is signing as a defensive back/kick return specialist.

The best part about Franklin is undoubtedly his speed. He once ran an unofficial 4.19 40-yard dash:

His official 40-yard time came at the Miami Dolphins local pro day in April and was recorded at 4.38. If you give me either time as a Bear, I’d take it if I’m Nagy.

We’ll see what Franklin has to offer in training camp, but again, he’s not one who is very likely to make the roster. Aside from the fame he’s had thanks to Netflix, Franklin is an incredibly raw prospect with much to work on.

Wouldn’t that be a fun story, though, if he somehow made the team?

Aside from Franklin, the Bears also added talent elsewhere after the weekend.

Matt Fleming, WR

Matt Fleming is a name that could sound familiar to some, as he comes from Simeon High School. Fleming played his college ball at Benedictine University and had 45 catches for 731 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Over the weekend, Nagy said Fleming was the one guy who stood out over the rest. Per the Chicago Sun Times, Nagy had this to say:

"“I think the one kid that stood out was Matt Fleming. Not a real big kid, but he made his assignments, did his job, made some nice catches.”"

Tyrin Holloway, DB

Coming out of Western Illinois, Tyrin Holloway doesn’t have to travel far for the next step in his football career. With so many defensive backs on the roster already, Holloway’s best shot might be at safety. He can play both corner and safety, so that bodes well for him. Holloway collected a total of 10 interceptions over his college career.

The Bears have their 90-man roster filled out, tentatively. I am positive it will change once more in the near future. But, for now, it is set, and includes these five guys who have been given another huge opportunity to further themselves in the game they love.
